Top 8 Best Foods to Survive Cold Season

I know, I know, it is FLU SEASON! Whether you are getting a flu shot or not, staying healthy during this time to combat colds and all other illnesses can be very important. One of the best ways to do this is by eating a proper diet that is going to help your body do it’s work, not harm it. What kinds of foods are the best to keep your body healthy and boost your immunity? I have rounded up the top 8 foods for you to enjoy every day to keep your immunity strong.

Citrus Fruits For Vitamin C

Many people know that vitamin C is important to consume during cold season but did you know that eating the actual fruit is more beneficial than supplements? Your body is perfectly designed to consume food, break it down and use the nutrients to help your body which makes proper nutrition so important to healing. I can’t stress this enough, grab an orange, grapefruit, or tangerine (organic if possible) straight away in the morning to get your dose of vitamin C!

Broccoli For Vitamin A, C, + E

Broccoli is one of those veggies that should be on your table multiple times a week and for good reason. It is loaded with healthy antioxidants, fiber, and nutrition that help your body stay healthy. I highly recommend trying out this recipe if you don’t think you like broccoli. Chances are, you haven’t tried broccoli in ways that are actually tasty.

If you are going for a quick and simple recipe, I would recommend trying broccoli oven roasted with a little oil, garlic powder, salt and pepper and BOOM, you have the best broccoli around!

Garlic For Fighting Infections

In the yogi community, garlic is only to be eaten when it is needed for medicinal use. Garlic has been known to lower blood pressure, slow down hardening of arteries, and boost immunity. There is also a high concentration of allicin in garlic that helps lower inflammation in your body. When your inflammation load is lower in your body, your body can heal things that you cannot always see making it much easier to keep your immunity stronger.

Ginger For Decreasing Inflammation

Ginger is a great food to eat when nausea kicks in or feeling a sore throat coming on. I would recommend having ginger tea if you are beginning to feel under the weather and until it goes away. Due to its high anti-inflammatory properties, ginger can help your body feel like new by getting rid of those pathogens.

Turmeric For Anti-Inflammation

Along with ginger, turmeric also has a high amount of anti-inflammation properties that helps heal your body. Turmeric can be enjoyed or added to many foods but it is often found in curries or Indian dishes. I like to add organic turmeric to sweet potatoes, oats, tea, pasta dishes, or other favorite foods to give my meal an extra helping of nutrition! Add black pepper to up its absorption in your body.

Green Tea For Antioxidant

The main reason to pick green tea instead of other teas is its processing treatment. As opposed to black tea that is fermented during processing, green tea is steamed. This helps green tea hold onto its EGCG antioxidant superpower that helps remove free radicals from your body.

I used to be OBSESSED with green tea. I first learned about its capabilities in high school. This was the first health food I can remember that made me believe in foods healing powers. Today, I believe in foods from the ground. I believe that our genetic makeup thrives on foods closest from its original form and know they are perfectly designed to keep us healthy and energized!

Papaya For Vitamin C + Papain

Even though papaya is not locally sourced, purchasing frozen papaya is still a great option for us folks not in tropical climates. Papaya has 224% of your vitamin C along with B vitamins, potassium, and even folate for a healthy body!

Papain is a naturally found enzyme that helps break proteins down into smaller pieces. Proteins are harder on your body to break down and giving your body extra help that helps keep inflammation lower. Try this papaya recipe for breakfast!

Sunflower Seeds For Immunity

Sunflower seeds are a powerhouse when it comes to nutrition intake. You can find vitamins E, B6, phosphorus, and magnesium all in these little seeds. Vitamin E is a little tricky to find naturally in foods so adding sunflower seeds to your food intake is a great idea. Vitamin E keeps your immune system running properly against viruses and bacteria but also helps protect your eyes and brain.
